2 “very positive” games for Warhammer 40,000 will disappear from Steam forever starting tomorrow, one of them you can still get today for 4 euros

On Steam, there are dozens of games related to Warhammer 40,000, and many of them are quite mediocre. Two of the stronger representatives are now set to disappear from the platform. However, there are alternatives.

What games are these? Sanctus Reach is a turn-based tactical/strategy game that strongly takes inspiration from the original Warhammer tabletop. You play as the Space Marines of the Space Wolves or the war-hungry Orks in several missions of a long single-player campaign as well as in free skirmishes.

Important mechanics in the game include cover and elevation differences, somewhat similar to XCOM. You can also play against other players in co-op or PvP. With DLCs, Chaos Demons and Astra Militarum will also be added as playable factions.

In Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon, you also play in turns, but control larger armies on hex fields. The game visually resembles earlier “Command & Conquer” titles, but the battles do not take place in real-time, and there is no base building.

The setting takes place on the eponymous planet Armageddon, where fierce battles rage. You control units of the Orks, the Steel Legion of the Astra Militarum, or various Chapters of the Space Marines in the campaign or in cross-platform multiplayer (the game is also available for mobile).

Are the games disappearing from Steam forever? Yes, publisher Slitherine has announced that the games will no longer be available for purchase on Steam starting Monday, May 19, 2025 (via Slitherine). However, those who purchase them will still be able to play them afterward. After May 19, you can still buy Sanctus Reach and Armageddon on GOG.com.

There is no official reason given for why the games are disappearing.

Here are the alternatives: Both Sanctus Reach and Armageddon are several years old, which is particularly noticeable in their visuals. The gameplay still excites die-hard fans. However, if you don’t want to spend money on old games, there are strong alternatives on Steam for both.

Instead of Armageddon, the turn-based 4X strategy game Gladius is a good recommendation. Gladius plays similarly to Civilization, but without diplomacy. In comparison to Armageddon, this game includes base building and a plethora of factions. Alternatively, with Dawn of War, you also have an old but one of the best strategy games available right now – but in real-time.

Sanctus Reach focuses more on individual skirmishes. A modern alternative is Battlesector, which offers the same gameplay principle, more factions, but fewer mechanics such as elevation advantages. If you only want to play Space Marines and are keen on XCOM gameplay, you should check out Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters, which can be surprisingly captivating.
