Warhammer 40K: This Leagues of Votann Release Is a Huge Boost For The Army

August 12, 2025

The upcoming release of new units for the Leagues of Votann is a big boost for a few reasons. Let’s talk about why.

This release window for the Leagues of Votann is bringing a handful of new units as well as an entirely new army mechanic to the game. It’s a going to make an impact on them in a lot of positive ways. Today, I wanted to cover why I think this is just the right mix of new stuff to really give the Leagues of Votann the bump they need.

Leagues of Votann – Reinforcements Have Arrived

If you go to the current page on warhammer.com for the Leagues of Votann, you can see that they have 14 items currently available. That’s really not a lot to start off with. Plus, two of those offerings are Kill Teams. We also don’t have a codex listed either. So we’re really only looking at a total of 12 units for the range at the moment.

This is reason #1 why this release of new units is such a shot in the arm. There are six new kits coming to the range and three of those can be build as variations on the same units/models. The Kapricus can actually be two different units: the Carrier or the Defender. But that’s besides the point. This release is effectively adding 50% more units to the range. This should open up quite a few more build options and ways to play the army.

Buri Aegnirssen, the Thrice-Devoured is going to be a melee boss and can also come back from the dead on a 2+ once per game, too. I think we’re going to see him pop-up in many lists just for the sheer distraction power he’s going to provide.

Another big combo from this release is the Steeljacks and Memnyr Strategist. Having this unit kited out for either ranged or close combat is going to make a nice hammer unit thanks to how tough and reactionary they can be. The free Overwatch or Heroic Intervention could be a big deal for them!

While I’m not entirely sold on the Cthonian Earthshakers, I do think they have some potential. Their BS is their weaklink but they get some things to offset that and they are launching a lot of attacks at decent range, too.

The point is that these reinforcements are going to open up new avenues for the Leagues of Votann to play in. It’s something the army desperately needed.

New Army-Wide Changes Ahead

Another big reason this army is getting a boost is the new Army Wide rules. It replaces the Judgement mechanics from the Index. But, to be fair, that system was kind of gutted when the Index launched for 10th. There was a lot of unhappy Leagues of Votann players when the edition flipped — understandably so! From the lack of units to the nerfing of their Judgement Token mechanic (justifiable or not) they weren’t really in a good spot.

But with a new codex on the way they’ve got a new Army Wide rule to play into. And to tag on to that, a third big reason is all the new Detachments they are getting.

Now, we’ve only gotten to see the tip of the iceberg here. But the five detachments that are coming in the new codex all lean into different aspects of the army. I don’t think these options would have been possible with the limited miniature range they had before. Now, with these additional units, GW is really expanding the playstyles of the Leagues of Votann in very positive ways.

Their Combat Patrol is also a good box to snag two copies of as well. It’s not the best deal out there but there’s only “generic” units in here. That means growing a Leagues of Votann army is going to be really fast to do. A couple of Combat Patrols and a sprinkle of the other kits and you’ve got a playable 2000 point army.

The Leagues of Votann Advance

Hopefully this encourages players both new and old vets to give them a go. If you’re a lapsed Leagues of Votann player you should be excited. I’m hoping that GW did this release justice. It’s starting to look like a much more well rounded army overall. I seriously doubt we’ll ever see the Leagues of Votann with a roster as packed as the Space Marines. But the range is growing. They’ve still got a long way to go and are still the newest (and smallest) army out there. But all these changes are a step in the right direction.

Hopefully GW keeps expanding their range. I think there’s room for another 6 units pretty easily in that army. I hate to say it but they could probably use a flyer unit of some sort. They really need a big warmachine besides the Hekaton Land Fort. Maybe a big walker or solo dreadnought-type unit. The Leagues could also use some other sort of eye-catching centerpiece unit, too. But I’ll let the folks at GW figure all that out.

The point is there’s still room to grow and it’s an army that’s got potential. I like the previews so far and I hope they land well. I’m going to be very curious to see how the new codex functions when players get their hands on it. Time will tell!

The Leagues of Votann are getting a great expansion here. Let’s hope GW keeps it up!
