Let’s look at the Top Imperial Knight Detachment combos to pump up your giant heroes on the 40K tabletop.
Goatboy here with a look into the best four enhancements from the new Codex Imperial Knights. These are the options I feel are the best for either an overall awesome Knight or just some method to bolster your army in a way to make it more powerful. There are a lot of fun things in this book and it has enough differences from the Chaos Knights to create some interesting interactions. Will these get used every time you see the new book on the tabletop? We’ll just have to wait and see as the season starts moving along after the end of September.
Mow Em Down!
Detachment – Valourstrike Lance
Enhancement – Bearer of Judicant’s Helm
Knight Dataslate – Any Big Friendly Knight
This detachment is all about letting your Knights gain the Assault keyword on their Ranged weapons when they advanced. The Enhancement lets you pick a Knight with 12″ and visible to the bearer the ability to Ignore Cover on their weapons. If you give this to a Crusader that hasn’t moved the model can gain Ignore Cover and Sustained Hits 1 on their Rapid Fire Battle Cannon and Avenger Gatling cannon. This is a lot of shots that are going to force the AP on the enemy most of the time or at least force them to spend a CP on some method to ignore some of your guns AP.
Knightly Hunting Pack
Detachment – Spearhead-At-Arms
Enhancement – Mentor’s Pride
Knight Dataslate – Knight Defender plus Armigers
This detachment is about making your Bondsman abilities get supercharged. If you give an Armiger a Bondsman ability and you haven’t used that one this turn you can now give it to 3 Armigers that are within 12-15″ depending on if your Honoured. The Enhancements give the units the ability to reroll hit rolls of 1 which can be very powerful and stacking it on top of the Bondsman ability – which for the Defender is give the units that ability to be -1 Damage to attacks hitting it. I know my World Eaters hate getting into units with -1 Damage on them.
Oath Speedrun
Detachment – Questoris Companions
Enhancement – Pennant of Silvered Fury
Knight Dataslate – Knight Gallant
The Detachments ability is you can do more Oaths if you fulfill one. On top of that the Enhancement is an ability you can expend your charge on to do something neat. When you fulfill your Oath they get recharged again to allow you to do the ability again. The Pennant lets you gain Sustained hits 1 when you are in combat so thus throwing it on the Combat monster in the Knights book just makes sense especially since the Gallant has Devastating Wounds with its attacks. Oh my lord if the old Devastating wounds ability was still there this dude would destroy borders of units throwing out flat 6 or 8 damage attacks.
Tank Shockingly Effective!
Detachment – Gate Warden Lance
Enhancement – Vengeful Tread
Knight Dataslate – Knight Atrapos (FW Knight)
This detachment is all about creating these “leylines” of defense across the battlefield and between objectives. This Enhancement isn’t pushing that avenue and instead just lets you have a Knight use Tank Shock for free. You could have a turn where you have a few tank shocks go off with one of the Lancers, another Knight, and this one with an enhancement. Also the detachment rule gives the model Sustained Hits 1 if they are on the “leyline” which seems pretty powerful for a knight that is as deadly as the Atrapos.
There are a lot of other options in the book but these are the ones that excite me the most. I do wonder if the Spearhead-At-Arms detachment might be the most fun as you start to chain Bondsman abilities amongst your Armigers on the table top. The new Defender chassis is also looking pretty good in this as they can easily pass out that 4+ invulnerable save as well as damage reduction amongst the masses of Squires on the table top.
