Games Workshop has introduced the new Legiones Inductii to the Horus Heresy. These fresh recruits are ready to jump into battle!
The Horus Heresy was a brutal affair of Legion vs Legion. Veterans were pushed to the limit and reinforcements were desperately needed on the front lines. That’s where the Inductii came in. These recruits were rushed into service. They may have been under trained and untested, but a Space Marine is still a Space Marine once you slap on that Power Armor! Today, we’re getting a free download from Games Workshop that lets you add these rookies to your Horus Heresy Army!
“The Inductii are key players in the latter days – hastily raised reinforcements pressed into battle earlier than would otherwise be expected – and their unique rules are a great way to add further character to your army.”
Legiones Inductii
For the Legiones Astartes getting new recruits into the fight was a big deal during the Heresy. Their streamlined induction methods meant that they may not have had all the training or equipment that their predecessors had. But such was the scale of the carnage that these Inductii were added to the meat grinder regardless. That said, this does open up a unique opportunity for them rules-wise. Games Workshop even said so:
“The new edition of The Horus Heresy gave us the opportunity for an in-depth revisit of the Inductii, providing a full Unit Profile for every Legion’s corresponding Inductii unit. Each is still based upon a Tactical or Despoiler squad, but dedicated space for Characteristics variations, Special Rules, and Wargear Options allows for each unit to be differentiated and balanced more effectively.”
So these units are still going to be be based on Tactical or Despoiler squads. However, they will have slightly different rules than their battle brothers to help distinguish them. Case in point, on top of Legion specific rules, their objective scoring rules have been tweaked.
“…those based upon Tactical Squads have the Line (1) Special Rule, while the Inductii templated upon Despoilers instead have Vanguard (2). “
This will mean that neither are quite as good as Tactical/Despoiler squads with their Line (2) scoring potential. But they will have other special rules to help shape their use on the battlefield. Each of the Legions have received a new unit of Inductii to add. In addition, the World Eaters (who originated the concept of the Inductii to begin with) will also have have the Butcher-Surgeon Prime Advantage. This let’s their Apothecaries boost their Inductii’s combat abilities even further.

Personally, I think this is a neat way to add a bunch of units to the game. Each Legion is getting a new unit to try out. And the odds are good that Players may have a unit or two laying around they can use as these new Inductii anyhow. Additionally these new Inductii also open up some new modeling opportunities for players. Bonus internet points if you paint them factory fresh with no battle damage…yet.
