Goatboy here and today I want to look at the three kits in the 40K Ork range that most need an update. GW PLEASE!
Right now the Ork line is pretty much completed with I think only one non-plastic model left (Weird Boy). With a line that is this filled out I think we need to look at reworking some of the older plastic kits and maybe see about upgrading them with some interesting options. Let’s call a Waaagh on some new updates!
Burna Boyz
The Burna Boyz are part of a combo kit with the Loota kit. I think we should really think about breaking these two apart and creating unique kits for each of these units. Let’s start with the Burna Boyz who always felt like a weird unit that never got enough use. These are the Orks that just love to burn things down so why not create a cool unit for them. I think we should first start with making them almost Nob like and moving towards a unit that feels like the Flashgitz but instead of bullets they are really into burning things. This leaves them with a 2 wound unit and I feel like better armor to help keep them protected from all the flames.
I would make them a 5 man unit with access to experimental flamer weapons that do a bunch of different things. We would also let them combine into the melee aspect a bit with the whole cutting torch idea as well which would create a really unique short range unit. These guys need to move up, get stuck in, and become an overwatch problem for the enemy. I really think it would also give way to some cool Kill Team options as they run around throwing out fire power and causing smoke and other sight related issues on the tabletop.
Lootas
From there will go with what I think needs to be done with the Lootas. I do not want to make them a “tougher” unit as the Flashgitz cover that aspect and these guys are just Orks who like to never let go of the guns trigger. This means I think we lean into the regular Ork Motif for these guys and leave them with access to a 10 man unit and lots of firepower. I think we can let them get experimental with their weapons a bit with access to some kind of Mek Nonsense and even more targeting Squigs to help out.
I really want to push that Lootas should be a different unit from the Burnas where we went with bigger and more Nob like in their stature we are moving towards more regular Boy make up and less “angry” leadership we see with the Ork ruling hierarchy. It is why I think we need to break apart the kits and create two unique options to help define this nature of the Orks. You end up having a bunch of weird looking guns with extra barrels, longer ranged looking sniper ones, and even go crazy with stolen bits from the Tau/Necrons.
Stormboyz
The final kit I think needs an update is the Stormboy kit. These are pretty nice models but come from the era before they really “beefed” up the regular Boyz. I think making them beefy and even going into the whole Nobz with jump packs could be really cool. These are the guys who follow Orders better than other Orks so why not really make them elite. Let’s create a small MSU unit that is designed to come in and hit hard.
You throw in some cool “grenade” drop abilities as they fly over the enemy, let them do some kind of cool tank shock like option with their steel toed boots, and let them be a true angry assault option. I think creating some unique MSU units that move away from the horde mentality of the Orks would help out. They shouldn’t always have big units and letting them create some unique small units would be cool.
The big push with going into creating almost unique Nob units is to just let the Ork player have some cooler and bigger looking units. Right now a lot of the Ork line kind of looks the same so pushing the aspects of the Ork into its different parts or clans could be fun. The Militant Storm Boyz raining from the sky, the crazy Burna Boyz razing the battlefield, and even the Badmoon like aspect of regular Lootas throwing whatever bullets they can in the sky.
