Toon, the RPG of Saturday morning cartoon zaniness, is getting an anvil-smashing, piano-dropping 2nd Edition next year.
Steve Jackson Games announced a 2nd Edition of Toon, a classic RPG from the 80s that first debuted in 1984. As the name implies, it’s a roleplaying game all about playing cartoon characters plucked straight from Saturday Mornings in the era before the Internet both ruined everything and also made the miracles of modern life possible.
Taking inspiration from Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, and other zany, slapstick animated antics, Toon was all about the limitless possibilities of toons. While it’s been a while since there’s been an update, cartoons have changed so much. And now that SJG has a new edition in the works, designed by Steve Jackson himself in collaboration with new lead design Jay Dragon, it seems the time has come once more to break out the ACME catalogue.
Toon 2nd Edition Announced – Coming To BackerKit Next Week
It’s not even a distant release, either. The whole project is set to come to BackerKit next week, with the crowdfunding campaign launching December 17th! This means you won’t have long to wait before you can see what exactly the new edition entails.
Personally, I’m excited to see the ethos that comes to the game after the rich cartoon landscape has been updated by cartoons like The Animaniacs and Tiny Toon Adventures which refined the raw madcap energy of predecessor cartoons into a laser-precise focus. Or the boundary pushing Freakzoid or even the more recent modern New Looney Tunes which is not afraid to show off just how much of an absolute menace Lola Bunny really is.
For now, here’s what we have to go on:
“Toon, designed by Greg Costikyan and developed by Warren Spector, is a family-friendly RPG that debuted in 1984. Since then, roleplayers have come to love the zany hilarity of a game inspired by the nostalgia of classic Saturday morning cartoons. Finally, there’s a new edition, revised by Steve Jackson and Jay Dragon.
Players will build custom characters for a campaign of cartoon craziness. The possibilities are endless. Characters in Toon can never die…even if they’re squished beneath a plummeting elevator or zapped by an excess of electricity! They’ll bounce back for the next scene, ready to make more mischief.”
Toon is one of those games you have to play to understand. But if you’ve played it, you know well the mark it leaves on your heart. And after 40 years, it’s time for an update. You’ll find simplified character design, dozens of “cartoon adventures” as well as more slapstick chaos and “Silly Tables” to play with.

Just try and keep your Toon characters away from that awful Dip!
