Goatboy here to look at the new 40K Leagues of Votann special character – Berehk Stornbröw – a very angry little Zerker. Is he worth your time on the tabletop?
There seems to be a nice little update coming to a few armies this week. I have already talked about the amazing T’au duo and this time I want to look at the new Leagues of Votann special character – Berehk Stornbröw – a very angry little Zerker. We don’t know the points yet so while his rules seem alright if he ends up being too expensive this little guy will just have to wander the wastelands a bit more.
Berehk Stornbröw – The Basics
Let’s start with the good stuff about this guy. Cthonian Beserks needed a leader option for their army and finally we got one – who ends up being an Epic hero. I sorta wish we had the Epic Hero option and a regular leader option but that is just me being nitpicky. He is a pretty powerful little dude that amplifies the Beserks with a powerful ability of granting Sustained Hits 1 to any unit he is in. This means if he is by himself he has Sustained Hits and if he is telling a bunch of his shirtless friends they also get Sustained Hits. I love this as it just always works and I hope we see this showing up for other characters in the coming months and next edition.
On top of this he also has the ability to give out a free Heroic Intervention which can be very useful. The way this is worded you could do 2 now and in an army of Beserks like the Delve Assault Shift detachment this could lead to some mean “counter” offensive on the enemy. I think both of these abilities stack up to a nice little combat hero but we are missing the one extra powerful thing.
Berehk Packs a Punch!
This guy has a flat 4 damage attack. This is pretty insane as that is a ton of damage to throw out. He even has a decent set of Extra attacks as well which let this guy throw out a nice bit of damage. His big hammer strike has Anti-Vehicle/Monster 3+ so anything he gets his mitts on will take some massive damage. The only real downside in all of this is the AP is -2 which I feel is a bit low. We have seen how AP really only matters if you can throw out a crap ton of -1 hits or get high enough to throw the enemy on their invulnerable save or a 6+.
Oh he also has a flat damage 2 sweep attack that seems good as well. The Hearthband Detachment has a stratagem to get a +1 damage to an attack versus a Monster or Vehicle so seeing this guy go ham with flat damage 5 into something seems pretty gnarly. He also has a 4+ FNP which is something to worry about, a 5+ invulnerable save, and a nice pile of 5 wounds. This should let this guy be annoying to chew thru as we all know how annoying a 4+ FNP is.
The Verdict
Overall I think if this guy comes in cheap he will show up as a nice little mini missile to boost up your Beserks or at the very least be a weird little threat hiding in a building. You have to respect the flat 4 damage which can just “wreck” something that fails a pile of saves. Just about all the big monsters have to worry if this guy is hiding and ready to get a crazy charge off.
All Hail the Votann
