A new Kickstarter project, Ariadne’s Book of Legends, looks to capture the feeling of epic-level D&D play with CR 30 monsters and more.
Epic-level D&D is the RPG white whale for a very specific set of gamers. The kinds of people who have gone the distance, made it to the endgame, and thought, “yeah, but what if there was more.” It’s a concept that’s been around throughout the history of D&D. It’s one even WotC knows, thanks to its various sourcebooks like the Epic Level Handbook or the upper part of 4th Edition. We love the idea of being the most powerful creatures around and still having adventures. Because winning is fun.
Now, the designers at Ariadne’s Codex of Strings have put together a new supplement that evokes the feel of the Epic Level D&D play of old. Ariadne’s Book of Legends wants to take your characters to 25th level and unlock a whole new tier of play.

I’m not here to tell you whether or not you’ll be the sort of person who enjoys epic level play. That’s something only you can discover – personally I do, I like my games to be a little higher powered because if we’re going to play, let’s really get in there and play – but that also takes a lot of work and time. No matter how good the rules are. In fact, usually the best rules give you more work to do.
And Ariadne’s Book of Legends adds a ton more rules to play with. It’s not just going to 25th level. There are new “heroic paths” that you can take. These are skill trees of different perks that all layer on top of each other. They exist apart from your class, so your Paladin might be a Combat Master or a Herald or what have you and gain even more stuff.

And on top of that, there are new 10th level spells – another concept that has been revived from the dust of D&D past – as well as new techniques for Fighters and the like, which let them do things like slice your soul from your body or strike with the force of a falling star. So there’s something for everyone!
