Reid Thompson Library to host introduction to Dungeons & Dragons event – DiscoverHumboldt.com

March 27, 2026

Local residents curious about tabletop gaming will have a chance to dive into a world of imagination next week, as the Reid-Thompson Public Library hosts an introductory event focused on Dungeons & Dragons.

The free session is scheduled for Tuesday, March 31, and is designed to help newcomers learn the basics of the popular role-playing game in a welcoming, beginner-friendly environment.

Head librarian Emma Lewis said the idea for the program came after local resident Chris Gaja approached the library about starting a Dungeons & Dragons club. The initiative quickly gained traction when library staff member Isaac Leicht expressed interest in helping lead the effort.

“There’s a lot of information about D&D, but a lot of the time people don’t really know where to start,” Lewis explained. “So for anyone that’s interested but not really sure where to begin, this is for you.”

The introductory sessions will walk participants through the fundamentals of the game, including how to use a character sheet, build a character, and understand how campaigns are run. Organizers say the program will run over several weeks, giving attendees time to build confidence and familiarity with the game.

Dungeons & Dragons, often described as a tabletop role-playing game, relies heavily on creativity and storytelling. Players take on characters within a shared narrative, guided by a “Dungeon Master,” and use dice rolls to determine outcomes as the story unfolds.

“It’s a lot of imagination and a lot of your own personality,” Lewis said, noting the game allows players to create their own stories, characters, and even monsters.

The library is encouraging participation from both beginners and experienced players. Those already familiar with the game are welcome to attend, either to join in or help guide newcomers.

“If anybody has knowledge of D&D and wants to come along and help others, they’re most definitely welcome,” Lewis added.

No registration is required, and the event is free of charge. Participants will be provided with character sheets upon arrival, and organizers say leaders Chris Gaja and Isaac Leicht will be on hand to guide attendees and answer questions.

If interest in the program is strong, the library is considering launching a full campaign as early as May.

The resurgence of Dungeons & Dragons in recent years, boosted in part by pop culture phenomena like Stranger Things, has brought new attention to the decades-old game, and organizers are hopeful the Humboldt community will embrace the opportunity.

“This is a chance to learn something new, meet people, and just have fun,” Lewis said.
