Baldur’s Gate 3 Players Are Just Learning About Game Master Mode In Divinity: Original Sin 2

August 27, 2025

Baldur’s Gate 3 could possibly be considered the best Dungeons & Dragons game of all time. The way Larian has weaved D&D rules into its gameplay offers ultimate player freedom, giving you the tools to overcome obstacles in any way you like. While not every BG3 player is well-versed in D&D rules, those who are can bend the world to their will.

However, considering that it’s still a video game, there will always be limitations, and you won’t be able to do all the things you can in a tabletop RPG. Now that most players have finished multiple playthroughs, some have been wondering why the game doesn’t have a game master mode to create custom campaigns. What they didn’t realise is that Larian already has a great RPG with such a feature.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Players Want A Game Master Mode Like Divinity: Original Sin 2

Imagine setting up a campaign within the world of Baldur’s Gate 3. While such fan projects already exist due to the mods tool, there isn’t an in-game level or campaign creator that lets you become the game master. With the amount of content that Baldur’s Gate 3 contains, a custom campaign tool would have spawned a whole industry of custom campaigns within the game.

That’s exactly what KnightofTrium pointed out in their Reddit post. “Imagine if Wizards of the Coast partnered with Larian or whichever studio they partner with next for BG4, but instead of making a game, they utilize the combat system from Baldur’s Gate and make an engine which Dungeon Masters can use to build combat maps and encounters,” they said.

That prompted players in the comment to point out that Larian has already done this, except not in Baldur’s Gate 3. If you’re one of those players who tried out Divinity: Original Sin 2 after BG3, you would have noticed a feature called Game Master mode. It’s precisely what OP wishes for – a built-in tool that helps players create custom campaigns using tools and templates provided by the developer.

You can check out the above tutorial video to see just how in-depth this tool is. You don’t need any advanced knowledge of mods, the tool provides almost everything you need and guides you on how to create your own adventure.

As for why this tool wasn’t in Baldur’s Gate 3, we can only speculate that Wizards of the Coast wasn’t too keen on giving players that much freedom. Perhaps that’s another reason why Larian parted ways with the publisher.
