The Free League Publishing Third Party OGL Expansion
According to a press release, the Free League Publishing third party OGL is being expanded to five different game licenses. Those exact games are Dragonbane, Coriolis: The Third Horizon, Coriolis: The Great Dark, Symbaroum, and Forbidden Lands. All of these licenses are royalty-free and irrevocable, allowing any creator to make their own supplements under the terms of the license.
The license includes the publication of books in several languages including English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese, Ukrainian, and more.
Free League’s OGL agreement initially started with the Scandinavian fantasy TTRPG, Dragonbane in 2023, shortly after the debacle with Dungeons & Dragons’ OGL, and quickly expanded in response to a large wave of creator-made books and supplements. This expansion continues to contribute to the longevity not just of Dragonbane but to the other RPGs in Free League’s catalog.
“Roleplaying is a uniquely creative hobby. As publishers of roleplaying games, we know that the real magic happens in the imagination of the players. We can’t wait to see what stories and worlds our great community will create using these licenses,” says Free League co-founder Tomas Härenstam.
The Free League Publishing third party OGL update continues a mutual relationship between publishers and players within the TTRPG space. The developers create and sell the core rules and sourcebooks. The players get inspired and wish to design and distribute their own. It is why platforms like DM’s Guild and Storyteller’s Vault are absolutely rich with original works by passionate creatives.
The fact Free League is allowing similar creative license across five titles, all with different tones and vibes, is a demonstration of confidence in the studio’s work and of the longevity of their work.
