The gold, the glory, the good gaming puns. All of it’s back in a big way as Munchkin: Second Edition launches on BackerKit.
In life few things are certain. Death, taxes, and popular gaming franchises getting lovingly skewered by Steve Jackson Games’ card-based loot-funnel, Munchkin. And now, after a full quarter century of updates and expansions, it’s getting a Second Edition. The Munchkin: Second Edition BackerKit campaign has hit the ground running, already more than doubling its goal in the first few hours. Treasure. Weapons. Puns. This game has it all.
Munchkin: Second Edition – Now On BackerKit
Look, let’s get clear here. Puns are one of the highest forms of comedy, right up there with a joke so clever you have to stop the conversation for five minutes to explain to your friends why it was actually really funny. And Munchkin is not shy about either. Every expansion is full of in-jokes that highlight the foibles of other games we love.
Now, with a second edition, we’ll get new art, new monsters, and more importantly, new gold. The new edition will play faster, with a simpler setup, though the basic premise is still the same: kick down the doors, kill the monsters (and possibly your friends), and get that sweet, sweet loot.
Though don’t worry about things being too new. The game still purports to “feel the same” while also having guidance for using your Munchkin 1st Edition cards. So you don’t have to throw them out, burn them, or whatever else you do with your outdated games.
“After 25 years of kicking down doors and battling monsters, a Second Edition of Munchkin is here! We kept your favorite jokes and monsters – and added more!
This edition feels the same, but it plays faster, and the setup is simpler. A new game mechanic – Gold Pieces – allows players to get change when seling Items and to micro-bribe their friends. Reference cards for each player have been added, so no more fighting for the rulebook – unless you just want to.”

A few of the SJG team design goals help to paint the picture of what M2E should look like. Notably, it’s looking to faster play so no one’s stuck at Level 9 forever, alongside backwards compatibility, updated win conditions, improved class balance, and of course, new jokes.
