The Dungeons and Dragons version of the game takes it a step further by putting players in the shoes of classic fantasy adventures and pitting them against some of D&D’s most infamous creatures. Horrified: Dungeons and Dragons is a cooperative board game where players work to defeat the various monsters that stalk the board. Each monster has its own rules and defeat conditions, and players have to travel the board, explore specific locations, find the necessary items, and defeat the various monsters.

The original version of Horrified: Dungeons and Dragons includes a Beholder, a Mimic, a Displacer Beast, and a Red Dragon for players to take on. But in fall of 2026, players may have something a little more blood thirsty to contend with. The upcoming expansion is bringing us to Ravenloft. Will this mean a run in with Strahd himself? We can only assume-slash-hope so!

The Horrified games are designed for maximum replayability, as every game will use a different combination of monsters and tactics. So every time players battle their way through the Undermountain, they will have a different adventure of collecting their items, rescuing citizens, and defeating classic D&D beasts.

How To Play Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons

To begin a game, players will pick their character and where their character’s standee will start as well as two monsters for the party to go up against. Each monster will have its own unique setup instructions as well as unique challenges and parameters that need to be met to defeat it.

Throughout gameplay, characters can make up to four actions per turn, which will include moving, picking up or using items, guiding citizens from place to place, sharing items with other players, revealing lairs, and fighting or defeating monsters. Players may also use one of their special actions, which are unique to each character. As heroes move around the board and take turns, items are added to the board, and monsters move and terrorize citizens.

As the heroes explore, collect items, and uncover lairs, they will meet the conditions for defeating the monsters to win the game. However, some monster actions could cause the terror raising to raise, and when it reaches seven, the players lose. Horrified becomes a race against the clock to defeat the monsters and save the citizens while there are still cities to save.
