Horus Heresy: New ‘Combat Forces’ To Jumpstart Your Next Army

August 18, 2025

Games Workshop has a new type of box for you to check out for the Horus Heresy. Combat Forces are a perfect way to start a new army.

Sometimes a good idea is just a good idea. Combat Patrol/Spearhead boxes from Games Workshop are a great way to spin up a new army or to add to an existing one. As a concept it’s a nice win for the players, too. Games Workshop is now expanding the idea out from 40k and AoS and bringing it to the Horus Heresy. Here come the Combat Forces boxes.

“The new edition of Warhammer: The Horus Heresy has been on shelves for a month or so now, and battle is raging across the world, as Legiones Astartes, Solar Auxilia, and Mechanicum armies clash on tabletops everywhere. If you’re looking to join in the action, or to expand your existing collection, three new Combat Force boxes, which will be coming soon, are the ideal way to get going. “

Combat Forces of the Horus Heresy

There are three new boxed sets coming to the tabletop: The Legiones Astartes, Solar Auxilia, and the Mechanicum. Let’s go over the contents of each one.

First up, the Legiones Astartes Combat Forces contains 22 miniatures. They are going to support both Loyalist or Traitor Legions so this is a one-box-for-all situation.

There are are 20 Legionaries in MkVI power armour which you can run as Tactical Legionaries with the standard bolters or you can build ten of them with missile lauchers or heavy bolters. The box also has two Tactical Marine accessory sprues for more customization options.

Also included is a Deimos pattern Rhino to transport your Legionaries around the tabletop. And finally, for some heavy ranged support, is a Leviathan Dreadnought. Oh and there’s also a Legiones Astartes transfer sheet and two Legiones Astartes vehicle tranfer sheets, too.

As for the Mechanicum’s new Combat Force it’s got nine miniatures in total. But they are BIG. You’re going to get six Thrallax in the box, a pair of Castellax Battle-automata, and a massive Thanatar Cavas Seige-automata! This might be one of my favorite miniatures from the range.

Obviously there’s also the transfer sheets for all these automata in the box, too. I think the only thing this box is missing is maybe a Magos to boss them around. But honestly, that’s also kind of nice. You could definitely get multiple copies of this box to fill out a Mechanicum force FAST.

Finally, we have the Solar Auxilia Combat Force. This box has 28 miniatures in total. You’ll get a 20-man Lasrifle Section. They have loads of accessory options to work with, too. There’s also the Tactical Command section that makes up five miniatures. On top of that, you’ll get a pair of Hermes Sentinels for some fast moving scouts. The last miniature included is the classic Leman Russ — what Solar Auxilia force leaves the base without one?!

Decals for all are included of course!

The new edition of the Horus Heresy is out and in full swing. What Combat Force are you most interested in?
