A quick update to the Neopets RPG saga – Neopets has issued a statement announcing that it has ‘terminated Geekify’s license.’
You might recall earlier this year, Neopets and Geekify were in the news after a rather odd-looking playtest of the RPG, which had kickstarted to the tune of around $425k. Yesterday, Neopets put out a statement updating the community on the RPG, most notably that the company had terminated its licensing agreement with Geekify. Here’s what we know.
Neopets Terminates Geekify’s RPG License
The statment came out yesterday. This is the latest news in the saga, following Neopets asking that Geekify take down the playtest document. At press time, Geekify has not yet responded – though it seems likely that we’ll have more of an update on the progress of the RPG in the coming months.
For now, here’s a look at the statement from Neopets. If you’re wondering about the future of the potential RPG, it seems as though Neopets is still keeping its options open, though it is at an “exploratory” state.
“We want to share an update regarding our partnership with Geekify Inc. After careful consideration, we have made the decision to terminate our license agreement with Geekify, effective immediately.
Over the years, Geekify has helped bring a variety of licensed Neopets products to life for our community. We appreciate the creativity and effort that went into developing these releases and we are grateful to the fans who supported them.
As part of our commitment to providing quality Neopets experiences, we regularly review our licensing partnerships to ensure they align with our long-term goals and with the standards we set for official Neopets licensed merchandise and experiential projects. We determined that it is in the best interest of the Neopets brand and our community to cease this specific project and ongoing license agreement. We wish the best for Geekify Inc as we both continue to grow and evolve separately.”
Of course, this puts into question the fate of the Kickstarter. For now, Neopets has directed all requests for updates on that to go through Geekify and Kickstarter: “general inquiries, backers with outstanding pledges and customer support needs should continue to go to Geekify Inc through their customer service channels.”
More on the story as it develops!
Neopets clearly would work as an RPG, it just needs the right home!
