In the mood for some old school, swords and sorcery gaming? With this deal from Humble Bundle, you can pick up $373 worth of Dungeon Crawl Classics books (DCC) for $40. This bundle of adventures, supplements, and setting books is all set in the fictional city of Lankhmar, from the Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser fantasy series.
In case you’re not familiar with this tabletop RPG, the pitch that’s often repeated by the game’s fans is ‘your batshit crazy uncle’s D&D’. It’s old school, rules-lite gaming, but dialed up to 11.
DCC is over-the-top, darkly comedic, sometimes silly, and regularly deadly. Martial characters are expecting to swing on chandeliers, kick down doors, and throw their sword across the room to strike out a cyclops’ eye. A wizard’s lot can shift on every spell roll; one turn they’ll be a god, crackling with power, the next their ‘Knock’ spell will tie their shoelaces together. Eventually, running hot with magic will lead to horrendous mutations.
As for Lankhmar, it’s the main setting of Fritz Leiber’s Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, a series which began in 1939, and which you’ll find in the Appendix N as one of the works that directly inspired the original Dungeons and Dragons. This bundle has everything you need to run a campaign in this world, from a city guide that’ll let you treat it as a sandbox, to 15 pre-published adventures. Oh, and the full bundle has the DCC rulebook too, for newbies.
There are actually two versions of this deal available, without even mentioning Humble Bundle’s usual shtick of offering fewer games for a lower dollar amount. You can buy this bundle for $40 and you’ll get physical versions of the setting books and about eight adventures, plus maps and a DM screen.
Or if you’re a PDF filephile (…sorry), you can get everything digitally for the much, much lower price of $12.
This bundle will be available for the next 16 days and supports the charity No Kid Hungry, which aims to end child hunger in America. Check it out here!
