This Free Steam RPG Is A D&D Player’s Dream

January 25, 2026

Dungeons & Dragons players will find solace in an RPG available on Steam that you can play for free. The TTRPG has been a source of inspiration for many games since the release of its first edition decades ago. Even RPGs like Skyrim and The Witcher 3 have been somewhat inspired by D&D. However, there are even official games set in the world of the TTRPG that you can play, like Baldur’s Gate 3 and the recently released Demeo x Dungeons & Dragons: Battlemarked.

Among these titles, there is one, Neverwinter, that is a great option for D&D players. The MMORPG, which is available for free on Steam and several other platforms, is heavily inspired by the TTRPG – in fact, the game’s name is a reference to one of the main cities in the Forgotten Realms in Faerûn, north of the Sword Coast and Waterdeep, and south of the menacing Icewind Dale.

If You Love D&D, Play Neverwinter

The MMORPG Is Completely Free-To-Play

If you’re a fan of D&D, its lore, characters, world, and more, you should definitely check out Neverwinter. As was mentioned, the MMORPG is completely free-to-play, and you’ll be able to play the adventures from level 1 to the level cap without having to spend any money on the game. The majority of the recognizable base classes from Dungeons & Dragons are available to play with, except for Druid, Monk, and Sorcerer.

There are several races to pick from, too, though a few are locked behind paid DLC packs. If you’re knowledgeable about character builds in D&D, you’ll be able to put that to good use in Neverwinter, as a lot of the game revolves around ability scores and character customization, even if applied to an action-based game.

In addition to the familiarity you may encounter with the character you build, you’ll also be met with several key locations, characters, and features from the TTRPG applied to this video game. For example, you’ll be able to explore several areas that are part of Faerûn, like the Underdark, while facing characters like Lolth, adventuring on a Spelljammer, or defeating the Red Wizards of Thay from D&D.

It’s Old But Still Going Strong

Neverwinter Was Released In 2013

Neverwinter is a relatively old game, as it was released back in 2013, but by MMORPG standards, it’s actually quite recent. The title has been constantly receiving updates, which have been expanding the amount of playable content. Last year, for instance, Neverwinter received the Red Harvest update, which focuses on the aforementioned Red Wizards of Thay.

Even though there isn’t a big new expansion in sight for the near future, the MMORPG is always hosting events for its players and getting some patches to fix and keep the game up-to-date. For players who are having a hard time finding a table or are facing scheduling issues, Neverwinter is the best next thing for Dungeons & Dragons, and its free status on Steam makes it all the more exciting.
