Warhammer 40K: Grey Knight and Black Templars Have Some Issues

July 31, 2025

Goatboy here with some iffy issues from the 40K Grey Knights and Black Templar codexes.  They aren’t bad, but they are messy.

Goatboy here with a hot mess review of the Grey Knights and Black Templar updates.  I don’t hate both books but thought there were some missing pieces in them. A lot of it feels like they are bringing some things in line with other books but with some of the newest releases getting into the bad territory for the 10th Edition 40K Meta it makes me think these books will land with a messy wet splat.

Grey Knights – Goodbye Draigo & Stern!

The biggest hot mess I feel from the Grey Knight book is the loss and neutering of some of their special characters.  They lost both Draigo and Stern which is a kick in the teeth a bit.  I was hoping we would see an upscaled and awesome looking Draigo but it sounds like they didn’t want his +3 to charge and Warp Dust smelling ways.  Stern is another weird one, but I can see them just not wanting to make a new model.  The odd duck in all of this is the old Brother-Captain model has stayed in the game.  It makes me think there will be a new one coming with either a Kill Team update or something else.  I am glad it stayed in as it gives the Grey Knights a much-needed combat helper for those Paladins will most likely be seeing.

Grey Knight & Templar Terminators Need Help!

One big armored question I have is why aren’t these good guy terminators better?  The Black Templar ones should be amplified with some default load outs and angry attitudes.  Give them the ability to Zeal whenever they get shot at and watch as this unit runs across the table.  The Regular Grey Knight Terminators should also be better and even something like giving them a sticky option or some other kind of blessing would be amazing.  The Terminators for both armies need to be focal points as they fit the fluff, and they just don’t feel nearly as good.  I don’t want to see more “tough” options but would rather see something going towards a more brutal/damage potential.

Grey Knight Melee Weapons are Bland

I don’t like how all the Grey Knight melee weapons are a flat strength 6, Ap -2, and flat 2 damage.  I really wish GW would move into a “multi-faceted” type of weapon load out that would reference how they are swinging the weapon.  You could image a sword having a slash, heavy, or parry option that you as a player would pick.  I remember the old days that Grey Knights could parry and think something like that could be interesting.  You could pick at the top of the turn what you want your models to do, and it allows you a much cooler set of options thru out the match.

The Dreadknight is Showing It’s Age

How annoyed are you that the Dreadknight is again super important but hasn’t really been updated.  I was hoping we would see some more Primaris options for the Grey Knights as it is one of the few “marine” books left out in the upgrade void. Also, the regular Dreadknights should have gotten the Melta option too.  I also hate how the old Dreadnought stays viable in the book when I would have rather had a cool Librarian dreadnought option to go running along with your models.

Bring Your Neophyte to Work Day…

For Black Templars I wish the other units could have “neophytes” added to them.  The Sword Brethren could be cool with some Chads that can take some damage.  Heck a ton of options could be cool with some Chads to take the bullets.  That could have been an awesome unit that just runs around and helps the team out by taking damage in the name of the emperor.

What do you think about the new Grey Knight & Black Templar Codexes?
