Warhammer 40K: Imperial Knights Crusade Rules Preview

September 4, 2025

If you’re looking to take your Imperial Knights on Crusade to build your own story you’re going to want to check out these rules.

Knights going on crusades seems fitting. At least historically. For 40k, I think it’s a tad odd only because I think of Crusade Armies as “slow grow” style armies. You build a small force, play a couple games, build more and add to it. But with Knights, that seems a little odd. Especially if you just jump right into having a Knight or two on the tabletop. Maybe start with some Armigers? Anyhow, GW has new Crusade rules for the Imperial Knights so lets give those a look.

“In exceptional circumstances, pilots can move to a different Knight chassis – especially when an Armiger pilot distinguishes themself enough to be granted a full size Questoris Knight. The new Crusade rules in Codex: Imperial Knights let you track it all, and will have your legendary pilots embark on perilous Chivalric Quests to earn further advancement.”

Starting off, each one of your pilots will get their very own Pilot Crusade card. These are kind of like the unit sheets for other units on Crusade. After that, it’s a matter of tracking their Chivalric Quests.

“There are four Chivalric Quests to choose from, each of which rewards you for doing exactly the kinds of things you want to be doing anyway – knocking out vehicles, killing characters, and muscling the enemy out of the midfield.”

You’ll want to track all these tally marks because those will award you those Chivalric points. And you want to earn at least four — otherwise your Knights will be dishonored and will have to go redeem themselves.

Those Chivalric points aren’t just for tracking your honor. They can also be used to advance pilot’s skills via their chosen mastery. There’s a total of eight to choose from but some are limited to specific Knight alignments.

These Knight Masteries aren’t the only things that will help your Knights level up either. There’s also all the Crusade specific Relics, Requisitions, and Badges. For example, we have the Hand of the Sacristan that lets you swap Knights out.

Knights can still earn those Battle Scars as well. So this could be a fun and narrative way to build up an Imperial Knight force. Personally, I’m not sure I’m fully behind a Knight Army on Crusade. It would make more sense to me if you were just battling other Knights…but that feels way more Mechwarrior than Warhammer 40,000 to me. But hey, if you can build a 1000 point Knight Crusade army, go for it!
