Games Workshop is showcasing Kill Team: Shadowhunt now. With two new Kill Teams on the way and more changes ahead.
The next major release for Kill Team is the upcoming Tomb World. But, likely due to some fuzzy pictures leaking early, GW has gone ahead and shown off a release that’s slated for a much later date. That’s how we are getting a look at Kill Team: Shadowhunt now.
“The Necrons have such ancient and complex technologies that they can exert limited control over the very forces of time, yet sometimes their meddling can have unexpected consequences – like a portal opening up to a Kill Team release from the distant future. For some reason their temporal gateways are always kind of blurry and at a strange angle, so Warhammer Community has engaged our top prognosticators to bring you a clear look at the box – Kill Team: Shadowhunt.”
Kill Team: Shadowhunt
Kill Team: Shadowhunt will feature two new Kill Teams. The Adepta Sororitas Celestian Insidiants and the Chaos Space Marines of the Murderwing.
Celestian Insidiants
These Adepta Sororitas are armed for battling Psykers. Which is a little funny considering their enemies. But if you read the backstory of Shadowhunt provided by WarCom it makes sense. There’s some strange rogue pskyer running around and they are basically going there to hunt them.
“Celestian Insidiants are outfitted with some of the finest anti-psyker wargear available to the Adepta Sororitas, including condemnor bolt pistols that fire anointed silver stakes and heavy maces fitted with null-field generators. Their elaborate power armour is decorated with spiritual talismans and wrought-iron crowns which focus their faith into an impenetrable shield against witchery.”
I’m curious to know if that has any actual in game effects as I’m sure they will. But I don’t know how effective that wargear will be against the Chaos Space Marines they are facing off against.

“Murderwing operatives are experts in high-speed aerial combat, and push their jump packs to the limit with a Boost – allowing them to strike nearby foes, howl demoralising shrieks, or even snatch whole operatives off their feet and drag them away while passing overhead. Slavering killers wielding heavy chainaxes and warp-wracked fanatics with wicked talons are equally welcome in the ranks of a Murderwing, egos held in check by the presence of a fearsome Chaos Lord.”
Honestly, these guys look like they could be very effective in Kill Team. Their high speed and verticality due to Jump Packs could make them quite deadly. And they are going to need that height based on the new rules coming.
Kill Team: Shadowhunt New Game Modes
Kill Team: Shadowhunt is adding a new type of map layout to the game. This one combines the ruins of Kill Team: Volkus with the underground Necron inspired layouts of Kill Team: Tomb World. These maps are called Descent Killzones and are divided into two smaller boards. The two boards (basically half of a standard board) represent the upper and lower sections of a single battleground. Operatives can move between the two sections enabling them to launch attacks from above or below. Personally, I think this sounds really interesting and I think you should get bonus point if you play on a stacked game board/table somehow.
It’s also worth noting that Shadowhunt also contains two double-sided boards. You’ll use these for the maps and missions included in the dossier. There are new Adversary Ops rules that have both Kill Teams battling each other as well as the defenders in the underground Tomb World. There’s also a series of three new Joint Ops missions. These tell a specific narrative. Oh, and there’s a special boss fight at the end.
This all sounds pretty fantastic. I’m glad to see GW experimenting with the map/gameplay as well as the narrative. Having a Joint Ops campaign with a boss fight at the end is exactly my jam. The downside is that we’re going to be waiting a while to get this one.
Tomb World is on the way, there’s another unannounced expansion to Kill Team, and then we’ll get Shadowhunt. At least we’ve got some exciting stuff to look forward to for Kill Team!
Stacked boards sounds kind of awesome…
