The Leagues of Votann are getting a new Army Rule along with their upcoming codex. Time to find out if all that toil finally paid off.
The Grudge mechanic of the Leagues of Votann is going away and in its place is something new. Today we’re getting a breakdown of the new Prioritised Efficiency. It’s the new army wide rule for the Leagues of Votann and adding a twist on things.
“Previously, the Kin were more than a little obsessed with settling grudges against enemy units – and while that’s very like them, they’ve now cooled off a touch and refocused their attention on taking and holding valuable resources.”
Leagues of Votann Army Rule Preview
Prioritised Efficiency allows the Leagues of Votann to essentially play the objective game (mostly) how you think it would go. At first, they are in Hostile Acquisition Mode — until they get 7 or more Yield Points at the end of your Command phase. Then they swap over to Fortify Takeover. So let’s see what those two rules are.
Hostile Acquisition is great for, well, hostilely taking over the objectives. Your units get a bonus to attacking the enemy near the objectives AND you can re-roll Advance and Charge roles, too. Fortify Takeover is the other rule that you’ll swap over to. This one still provides a similar boost to Hit Rolls, but only for targets that are near objective markers you control. Additionally, it makes your troopers tougher to take out with a -1 to Wound rolls for attacks that target them.
It’s certainly an interesting way to change things up. But that change-up does require Yield Points. Earning those Yield Points is kind of a big deal…so how do you do that?
So really, it’s just playing with the objectives in mind. Furthermore, you can also spend Yield Points on things, too.
“They’re used for more than just switching from attack to defence, and many Stratagems and Enhancements get a little extra oomph if you spend YP when activating them. Not only does this give you a reason to build up more past the critical threshold, it also lets you manipulate your stockpile in case you’d prefer the benefits of Hostile Acquisition for that turn.”
Honestly, it makes sense and if you’re a play that tends to play the objective game well, this army could suit you nicely. Especially once you consider which Detachments fit your playstyle.
Additional Rules Previews – New Detachments
The Needgaârd Oathband is consider the most “conventional” Detachments. It also gets build up YP by killing enemy units, too. On top of that, spending them via their stratagems is also fairly effective.
As you can see this Detachment really does treat YP as another currency you can tap into. Using your resources wisely and effectively is a surefire way to the get the most out of this army. And there’s other Detachments to try out as well.

Additional Detachments From The Leagues of Votann
There are another four Detachments that Games Workshop mentioned:Dêlve Assault Shift Detachment, Persecution Prospect Detachment, Brandfast Oathband and Hearthfire Arsenal Detachment.
Elsewhere, the close combat-focused Dêlve Assault Shift Detachment grants Cthonian Beserks the Deep Strike ability and Battleline keyword, with Enhancements and Stratagems aimed squarely at getting them into the melee as fast as possible. By contrast, the Persecution Prospect Detachment favours Hernkyn scouting units and their long-ranged firepower, keeping enemy units pinned down with focused volleys that cripple their movement and set them up for brutally effective counterpunches.
Brandfast Oathband leans more into the transport vehicles of the Leagues to form your main lines. They functions kind of like mobile command centers are and ideal candidates to use with Hostile Acquisition considering they can hand out Sustained Hits 1 to Infantry around them. The Hearthfire Arsenal is for your Ironkin and Brôkhyr units. For them, it’s time to bust out some of the more experimental weapons and advanced firepower to lay down the law on the enemy.
It’s all sounding like a step in the right direction for the Leagues of Votann. The loss of the Grudge System was certainly a blow. But hopefully this new version will start to course correct for the army and make them even better to play.
