Games Workshop is reviewing the firepower of the Leagues of Votann. We’ve got better look at the new toys with this one.
The Leagues of Votann previews continue to roll in. Today, we’re getting a look at new units, weapons, and a some unique rules. It’s a good mix of stuff so let’s stop stalling and see what these space miners have dug up!
“We saw a whole Oathband of new units for the Leagues of Votann during the recent Big Summer Warhammer Preview, from the Tyranid-hunting hero Buri Aegnirssen to the swift Kapricus – and they’re just about to hit pre-orders. It’s high time we found out what they all bring to the table.”
Leagues of Votann – Firepower Previews
First up we have the new character coming to the range. It’s the legendary Thrice-devoured Buri Aegnirssen. He’s packing some gnarly wargear after his run in with the Tyranids.
His Darkstar Glaive has two attack modes: One for big prey and one for the little guys. Both are deadly in their own right. What’s also scary is how this little guy can scoot around the tabletop thanks to his Unhinged Vengeance. This ability can only be triggered once per phase but it gives him a D6+2 move — but it has to be towards the closest enemy (excluding Aircraft). What’s also mean about this is that it can put him into Engagement Range, too.
I do have some bad news though. He can’t join other units (apparently). So odds are he’s going to often go off on his own to attack the enemy. You might want to consider screening him or at least bringing back-up! Or at least some ranged support. The new Arkanyst Evaluators are a great new option.
I like the risk vs reward of this weapon. It’s got some serious punch if you want to take a serious risk. It might be worth it depending on the target! Although that Overcharge makes Hazardous tests pretty spicy.
Another new character joining the fray is the Memnyr Strategist. They really play into the new Yield Points mechanic for the army and are certainly worth considering for that alone.
Personally, I could see bringing in one or two of these to camp on objectives. It might not sound like much but being able to swing the Yield Points how you need them is going to be a key part of this army. The Memnyr Strategist sound like a really good way to lean into that. Plus you can toss them in a unit of new Steeljacks for safety.
Ironkyn Steeljacks do have both melee and ranged options. Depending on how you want to utilize this unit all comes down to how you have them kitted out. Personally, I think having the ranged option baby sitting a Memnyr Strategist could be really good. Especially because of the Strategist’s Predictive Guidance ability which gives them a free Overwatch once per battle round!
If you want to really stay away from the enemy you might want to consider the new Cthonian Earthshakers. These mortars are the new artillery piece the Leagues of Votann are bringing to the battlefield.

They have a few different types of shells they can rain down on the enemy. Or tunnel up on them? I’m still a little fuzzy on these and really want to read more about them. Anyhow, their attacks can pump out damage …if you can manage to hit with them. I’m a little less impressed with their BS 5+ but they probably aren’t moving a ton and also have the heavy rule. Still…it’s probably a good thing they are lobby so many attacks.
Finally, we get a look at the Kapricus Carrier that can transport Hernkyn Yaegirs around. This seems like a great way to taxi your Yaegir units around the tabletop and provide some supporting fire at the same time. There’s also the Kapricus Defender option for more firepower, too.
Well, that’s all for this rules preview from the new Leagues of Votann codex. Their pre-orders are coming very soon! I think things might be looking up for this army. We’ll have to wait and see ALL the rules though.
