Strangely, there’s a new Marneus Calgar on the way!? That is why I want to talk about five far more deserving Warhammer 40K kits GW really needs to update!
I am not going to lie to you. New Ultramarines just aren’t doing do it for me. I know a ton of painters that do amazing Blue Marines, but this guy just doesn’t have any joy sparked when seeing blue marines. I love the Space Vampires, respect anyone that does a nice Yellow Marine army, and even enjoy throwing down on some Black armored Marines. The Blue Boys of the Emperor are just not a Chapter I enjoy. That is why I want to go thru the 5 different models I would have rather had updated than seeing another Calgar show up.
Let’s start this by saying splitting the Victrix guard from Calgar will be a good thing for the balance of the game. Letting weird little combo HQ units show up is an odd thing especially when you stack things like Feel No Pain on the character. It just creates a weird state when the Bodyguard unit is killed and now you can start weirdly taking wounds on the character or his friends in the unit he is in. We’ll see if both sets of armor stay in the game but for now let’s hope that old Calgar is just getting replaced by the new and shinier Calgar. Onto the guys GW REALLY needs to update:
Chaos Space Marines Terminator Character
The old CSM Terminator is just a weird combo kit that lets you make a Sorcerer and a Chaos Lord. It is super old, sized kind of weird, and just doesn’t fit into the new ethos that the Chaos Kits have. I know you can kit bash them out of the new terminators, but it makes no sense to not just make a new one. Heck you could add in a ton of other bits to it so the other legions could get their own special character all worked up to be cool and unique – like the new Chaos Daemon Prince.
Ork Weirdboy
Did you know this model is still usable by the Ork army and is currently a finecast model. Why didn’t they just make a new one? Is there a new one waiting in the wings that is ready to jump out with a pile of boyz and Ghaz? Did you remember back in the day that this was actual a Special Character and not just a Weirdboy? Oh Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Death Guard Lord of Contagion
I know a ton of us had a bunch of these guys from the old starter boxed set, but any new Death Guard player will have a hard time finding one of these guys. The current plastic model is a quick build kit that just looks a bit silly when you compare it to the starter kit or just the overall vibe of the army. I don’t know why they haven’t released an updated sprue that would be an easy design and make life easier for those wanting to start off doing terrible things to their friends on the tabletop with the Contagion Jerk and his Deathshroud Homies.
Astra Militarum Catachan Jungle Fighters
I won’t how many times I have been beaten up by the must muscle bound models in the AM line of thugs. These guys are so, so old, the current plastic Catachan Squad showed up in 2001. These guys have been waiting for an update for 24 years! It just doesn’t make a ton of sense we haven’t seen a simple refresh on them. It can’t be too hard to get a bunch of sculpts done of muscle dudes smoking a cigar and wearing bandanas. We saw some updates with Catachan Command Squads, some limited release store models and other fun things so why not make a whole squad GW?
Dark Angels Ezekiel
I don’t like Dark Angels as their Deathwing Knights always punch my World Eaters too hard in the mouth. I love the way this old model looks. He just screams Grim Dark and a simple redo by pushing his size to be bigger, making his sword look awesome, and then some cool power effects would make for a bad a$$ little model to paint up. It is just nutty to see him still in the game, still in the fluff, and not have a cool and unique model.
Honorable Mention – Karandras
I know I missed the good ole Standby Aeldari Karandras model – that debuted in 1994! It should be in this list and while I dislike the Aeldari, this 31-year old model running around the tabletop in 2025 is causing me physical pain! We’ll put Karandras down as number 6 on our list with an asterisk and call it a day as while I am a hater I feel the pain for those poor Striking Scorpion models.
